The Women of Numa Ridge Fire Lookout

Life as a lookout isn’t easy. Kay Rosengren loved it.

Edward Abbey spent the summer of 1975 in Numa Ridge Fire Lookout, perched on a remote mountain in Northwest Montana. He hated it.

But nearly 20 years earlier, Numa also hosted one of the first women to work as a lookout in Glacier National Park: Kay Rosengren. This is her story.

Located in the episode “Confluence | North Fork”, from season one of Headwaters. Season One set out to share stories of nature and culture from each major region of Glacier National Park.

I had my first foray into the wonderful world of baking bread. It was heavy enough to be a doorstop, it was gray, and it quivered.
— Kay Rosengren
