Desert Tortoise 101

Worked with Joshua Tree National Park wildlife biologists to produce this 12-minute video, covering:

  • Mojave Desert Tortoise natural history and ecology

  • Threats facing them as a species

  • & Ongoing conservation efforts

Since release, it has been extremely well received.

It’s been adopted for use in All Employee Training, and being featured by Scholastic Magazine + in an online portion of an upcoming desert wildlife series.

45-minute Video Presentation, delivered virtually at the 2021 NAI Conference.

2021 NAI Conference Presentation

In National Parks, Interpretation is defined as:

a purposeful approach to communication that facilitates meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us.

After producing Headwaters, my colleague Andrew and I presented at the 2022 National Association of Interpretation Conference—showing other park sites how to create high-end podcasts that align with the mission of the NPS.

I wrote, filmed, & edited this video in my free time to present virtually. We had over 100 conference attendees, and received enthusiastic, positive reviews.

Visualizing Raven Population Increase

Stylized Transition

Animations

Using Adobe After Effects and other software, I’ve created short, snappy animations that help video visuals, elevate uninteresting visuals, and hold the viewers attention.

This includes:

  • A 3D animation of the NPS Arrowhead Logo

  • An overhead depiction of declining tortoise populations

  • An animated graph showing an increase in raven populations

  • An animated wipe transition using the subject of the video

Virtual Learning Programs

Virtual Learning Programs

Traditionally, the Glacier Education team offers field trips in the spring to local Kindergarten through 6th grade students. At the beginning of the pandemic, I worked to create video versions of those field trips so our teachers could still offer the experience to their students.

  • 7 videos exploring fire ecology in the northern Rockies

  • 7 videos exploring how wild animals use their senses

  • 10 videos exploring the NPS sites of Montana

All 24 videos were produced in just 7 weeks, with the help of a small, talented, collaborative team. Videos were received well by local teachers who distributed them to their classrooms in 2020, and continue to use the videos today.

Field trips like this were offered daily before COVID. These videos captured the message in a different medium.
